Today we re-filmed our excerpt of the Caucasian chalk circle!
We cut the scene a bit because we didn't have a whole lot of time (this meant I ended up simply filming and prompting the action) and it was so much better than yesterday!
We filmed in an empty classroom, and the chairs/ desks/ computers / signs everywhere help to establish and constantly remind the audience that this is actually just a play being performed by school kids - a Brechtian technique to further emotionally alienate the characters. Other V-effect or alienation techniques we used were casting Paul as the main female character of this scene (the governor's wife) to prevent the audience from forming an emotional connection or understanding of the character - instead she just appears ridiculous, cruel and inhuman. This exaggeration also gets the audience to think about the rich vs. poor notions raised in the scene.
