Today we read through The Caucasian Chalk Circle with BIB, analysing the conventions (and aims) of epic theatre, and how they are reflected in the play.
Some techniques included:
- using third person or full names to alienate the characters. e.g.. they are 'a lady' or 'simon chacha' - instead of a 'she' or a 'you' that the audience can understand and be emotionally invested in.
- Taking typically emotional relationships/ scenes / scenarios and removing feeling from them, for example Grusha and Simon's engagement or Natella leaving her baby. This furthers the audience's emotional detachment
